Right now, WWE are having very little issues in regards to their finances. They’re raking in record profits, with their TV deals often being a major reason why. The big ones are their deals with FOX & USA Network in the United States, but they have other deals all around the world. Right now however, they might be looking for a new home in Japan, as their longtime deal with J-Sports is coming to an end in 2022.
J-Sports Discontinuing Their WWE Coverage
This news follows WWE shutting down their Japanese offices and saying off the employees a few weeks back. Considering WWE was looking to start up NXT Japan in 2020, they have certainly cooled off with trying to expand outside of North America. Other failed NXT expansion plans include Australia and India.
With J-Sports dropping their deal with WWE, soon the only WWE program that will show in the region will be “This Week in WWE” which airs on SamuraiTV. That is a simple recap show of RAW & Smackdown. The source is JSports themselves, who stated the following on Twitter.
“WWE Raw” and “WWE SmackDown” will be discontinued, and J SPORTS On Demand’s “WWE Pack” will be discontinued.”
A Chance For AEW To Swoop In And Take Their Spot
It’s unclear if WWE will be seeking a new provider in the region. They are mostly focused on their major money deals right now, and keeping FOX & USA happy with their declining viewership and rampant releases is hard enough. WWE is still a major promotion in Japan however, with many fans enjoying it since the Attitude Era.
AEW has a chance to swoop in and take this spot, as they currently have no provider in Japan. Having links to New Japan Pro Wrestling and DDT Pro Wrestling might help their case in making a deal, as they already have built in fan demand in the region.
