Over the weekend, CNN fired the host of Cuomo Prime Time, Chris Cuomo. The decision came during the host’s suspension when the network received more information about Cuomo’s involvement in his brother—former NY governor—Andrew Cuomo’s ongoing sexual harassment battle.
Now, it looks as though the younger Cuomo has gathered a team of lawyers and is ready to sue the news network. That is, if it doesn’t pay $18 million on the remainder of his contract.
Money Could Be The Next Issue Between Chris Cuomo and CNN
After details trickled out over the past weeks about what Chris Cuomo was doing surrounding his brother’s sexual harassment issues, it has escalated into an issue of money. Cuomo is said to have been making $6 million a year and is said to have anywhere between $18 million and $20 million left on his contract.
Chris Cuomo Reportedly Prepared to Sue CNN for At Least $18 Million Left on His Contract
Sources close to the issue say that Cuomo is expected to seek damages as well. According to insiders privy to the sensitive issue, CNN isn’t going to pay Cuomo anything. After all, this is a case of SFI—self-inflicted f***ery—which the CNN insider didn’t add.
However, his release from CNN is his own doing and if his contract is similar to say the contract deal between Kevin Spacey and the production company behind House of Cards where misconduct kills any opportunity to get a payout from CNN, the situation is cooked for Cuomo.
Actually, another source said as much stating that “CNN has a standard morality clause” in contracts. Meaning if they go against that clause then the network is able to ax them. Law firm Cravath, Swaine, & Moore confirmed this with CNN as well.
On top of that and perhaps to cement not paying Chris Cuomo, CNN is expected to launch a probe into allegations of sexual misconduct by the former host during his time with the network.
In all of this Cuomo and his team haven’t been passive and just taking the hits. A spokesman told the Wall Street Journal that CNN President Jeff Zucker knew what Cuomo was doing to help the former governor. With CNN on the offensive to the point of reporting on the drama on the network, it said that these accusations were false.
CNN has since removed Cuomo from the Profiles section of its site.
