When you think of professional wrestlers who are iconic with beer, you probably first think of Stone Cold Steve Austin or current AEW World Champion Hangman Page– but if you were more into ECW, The Sandman is second to none. For years, he would kick off his matches by chugging back a beer and smashing the can into his forehead, starting matching bloody before going into a kendo stick onslaught. However, as the years have gone on – Sandman has managed to kick his drinking habits.
The Sandman Has Been Sober For Atleast Half A Decade
While speaking on the Wrestling Inc Daily podcast, Brian Meyers would speak about his love of ECW. He can’t hear Enter Sandman without the mental image of Sandman smashing a beer over his head. However, he’d share an interesting tidbit – with the fact that legendary alcoholic Sandman is now sobered up.
“I don’t know if this is public knowledge but he’s sober right now. So if you watch him on an indie show or whatever, he’s just kind of making a mess of beers but he’s not consuming.”
This has been the case for at least half a decade, with fans noting that he has just made a spectacle about the beer for his entrance. It could be possible that even before that, Sandman was using non-alcoholic beers.
Amazing That He Still Enters The Ring In 2021 After A Long Career
Considering the style that The Sandman has always worked, it’s amazing that he still frequently wrestles in 2021. He has worked six matches in 2021, a steady number over recent years. For someone in their late 50’s who spent years taking insane bumps off ladders and through tables.
Many of his fellow ECW legends are either retired or dead at this point, with names like Sandman, CW Anderson, and Rhyno being the few still getting into the ring. He was an icon of the promotion, truly displaying everything that the promotion stood for. There is a reason he never really fit in with WWE or WCW, and only truly shined on tribute shows after the passing of ECW – but he always kept his fans.
