It’s safe to say the WWE’s 24/7 Championship is the most hated, or most ignored, championship in the company’s history.
At the very least, it’s up among the worst and WWE Hall of Famer and AEW announcer Jim Ross recently called it Hideous.
Mick Foley teased us with an announcement of a new title to be unveiled on WWE Raw on May 20, 2019. It got many fans’ hopes up that they were bringing back the old Hardcore Championship.
The disappointments were only just starting.
“It’s hideous”
On the most recent edition of Jim Ross’ podcast Grilling JR, JR shared his opinion on the title, and they weren’t complimentary at all.
Special thanks to itrwrestling.com for the transcript.
“It was just another watered-down championship (Hardcore Championship), and now it’s even worse. The 24/7 title, right? That’s hideous. It’s not even realistic. It has had so many champions, you can’t name them all.”
This is they typical response for many when the title’s brought up, but there have been some fun moments with it.
While it was a take on the old Hardcore title rules, it lacked the impact that title did because, well, it’s a direct copy with a new name. Basically, a remake.
Titus O’Neil won the scrum to be the inaugural champion, and Robert Roode took it from him. The highlight of the championship were R-Truth’s escapes with Akira Tozawa and Drake Maverick, and then seeing Reggie’s athleticism on display. The rest well…
At this point, there have been 51 different champions from current wrestlers to retired ones to entertainers. Some were repeat champions as the 24/7 championship has seen over 150 reigns.
Currently, Dana Brooke is the 24/7 Champion after she pinned Cedric Alexander, and Reggie is doing his best to protect her from R-Truth, Tozawa, and Tamina.
R-Truth is the most dominant champion with 52 title reigns that cover 425 days.
Trying to stay relevant
The WWE is doing everything they can to ensure the title remains relevant with vignettes showing R-Truth and Tozawa putting on awesome performances as they chase after the title.
We’re surprised it’s continued this long, and it feels more like the chase for the title is a way or excuse to break up a match for a “surprise” winner or to break up the action.
It’ll be fun to see how history remembers this title and if it’ll be forgotten for being so hideous and nearly impossible to track the history of it over the last couple of years.
