When it comes to commentary in WWE, there are many iconic names – but few voices are more iconic when turning on a WWE show than Jerry ‘The King’ Lawler. A legend of Memphis Wrestling, Jerry Lawler joined the then WWF in the 1990’s, working as both a wrestler and member of the commentary desk. Since then, he’s been off and on with WWE – but will be sticking around for the coming years.
Jerry Lawler Signs New Contract With WWE – Length Unknown
This news comes from a report that Jerry Lawler has signed a new contract with WWE. Right now, he’s not doing commentary constantly – more just pitching in as an analyst for PPV pre-shows. WWE has him as needed, which doesn’t rule out him replacing Jimmy Smith or Pat McAfee at a moment’s notice. The length of his new deal is unclear, but Lawler would have become a free agent at the end of 2021.
We could even see him be the replacement for Beth Phoenix, who finished up on NXT commentary with NXT: WarGames. Phoenix is expected to show up on Monday Night RAW, backing up her husband Edge for the coming feud with The Miz & Maryse. Putting a veteran like Lawler on NXT commentary would be odd, as they want to draw in a younger audience – but he’s certainly an option.
Still Ready To Step Into The Ring
In addition to this, Lawler even remains a capable in-ring performer. The 72 year old has worked seven matches in 2021, facing the likes of Big Cass, nZo and Scott Steiner. His latest match came in November against The System, a wrestler with just a few years of experience. Lawler always worked a safe style, with his most high risk spot being a second rope fist drop – which helps to give a long career for sure.
This could come into play with a special entry in the 2022 Royal Rumble. WWE has been wary of letting Lawler compete due to health issues, not wanting him to almost die on TV again. However, it’s the Royal Rumble, it really should have at least one king.
