Apparently, Madonna could be hard to keep up with as a friend, according to comedian and actress Sandra Bernhard. Going back decades, there was a time when Madonna and Bernhard were the closest of friends. That friendship saw the two constantly in the headlines for all of their shenanigans and media appearances.
Actress Sandra Bernhard Says That Former Friend Madonna’s Relationships “Just Don’t Last”
Then things just ended between them. Sometimes friendships just end but when it comes to friendships—or any relationship—there is usually some news on why things fell apart. It’s usually a messy breakup as well and rarely ever a “drifting apart” situation.

Bernhard sat down with Jess Rothschild on the Hot Takes & Deep Dives podcast and one of the topics was on her friendship with Madonna during the late 1980s and how it ended. The two were known to be good friends and spent a lot of time together.
Madonna even made a surprise appearance during Sandra Bernhard’s Late Nite with David Letterman appearance in 1988. The two of them regularly did shows in New York City and ran in similar acting circles. She noted that the difference between how their relationship played out and how relationships play out now is down to no social media and how there were fewer magazines covering celebrity news back then.
“We were out and about, and it’s just amazing how few pictures there really are of us. Had that been now, it would be like…it would be everywhere and have absolutely no impact whatsoever.”
Sandra Bernhard mentioned that as she grew as a performer and a person, she wasn’t really big on the spotlight that was put on their friendship and “having to work it constantly”. She added that an attempt was made on her part to let Madonna know that she was there for her and “not just somebody that’s passing through.”
Today, it’s safe to say the two really don’t know what’s going on in each other’s lives but the interview was an interesting look at one of those celebrity friendships that was public years before Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie in the early-2000s. Sandra Bernhard was most recently known for her role as Judy Kubrak in the FX series Pose.
Meanwhile, Madonna has spent late 2021 dealing with social media backlash over her Marilyn Monroe deathbed recreation photo and bickering with rapper and television producer 50 Cent over other photos.
