Things are looking bleak for Ring of Honor going into what should have been a strong 20th year. They are shutting down for the first quarter of the year, and have plans to release all of their contracted talent. So far, Jay Lethal has signed a deal with All Elite Wrestling, having made his debut at Full Gear before unsuccessfully challenging Sammy Guevara for the TNT Championship – but two more former champions from Ring of Honor were spotted backstage during the latest episode of AEW Dynamite.
Ring Of Honor Champions Backstage At AEW
Both former ROH Pure & Tag Team Champion Jonathan Gresham and ROH Grand Slam Champion Matt Taven were spotted backstage at AEW Dynamite. Gresham lives in Atlanta, which makes him showing up backstage when AEW is in his home state pretty normal. He’s got friends who work for AEW, and could have just been checking in on them – and perhaps recruiting for his new indie company Terminus.
Matt Taven however was a bit more out of his way, but not shocking. Despite negative fan reception in Ring of Honor, Taven always proved himself in the ring. At 36, he’s in the prime of his career – and has a lot to offer a company. We’re likely to see him at least get a chance in AEW, perhaps as a future challenger for the TNT Championship. Taven is also a sought after name in Mexico and in the indies, securing his future.
Bryan Danielson vs. Jonathan Gresham Is Now Possible
However, this is potentially opening the door for a match that many fans have been yearning for. Jonathan Gresham just came off an incredible run as ROH Pure Champion, showing his skills as one of the best technical wrestlers in the world. Bryan Danielson is in the middle of a similar run, showing people why The American Dragon is someone to fear – and potentially claiming the AEW World Heavyweight Championship.
Regardless of the result of Hangman Page vs. Bryan Danielson, a perfect next feud would be Danielson taking on Gresham. Give those two half an hour on AEW Rampage, and you have a match that could top even Danielson’s match with Kenny Omega. Gresham has noted he will remain loyal to Ring of Honor regardless of contract status, and with his focus on Terminus – any potential deal with AEW would be part time. Both Taven & Gresham are set to compete at Final Battle later this month.
