It’s a Christmas edition of Wrestling Salvage Yard and we’re looking at one of the notable teams of the Attitude Era: The Headbangers.
The WWE Career of The Headbangers
This team had an odd history in the company as they were always around during the late-90s. They were a staple of WWE Shotgun Saturday Night. However, they were never a featured or marquee team or even depicted as a tag team threat. The Headbangers just existed.
Their two title wins in the company—the WWE Tag Team titles and NWA World Tag Team titles—resulted in pretty short reigns. After the belts were lost, they were regular teams on television and the PPV undercard. There were times when The Headbangers were actually interesting but their big thing about them was a unique look compared to other teams in WWE.
I will say that their Stage Dive finisher was also pretty damn cool. You didn’t see it often unless they were going against a scrub team but it was a cool tag team finisher that matched their gimmick. To sum them up, picture The Nasty Boys with less charm, less mic ability, and less physicality in their matches. They were a team that would’ve stood out more if it was ten years earlier.
When they hit WWE in 1996, they pretty much got lost in the shuffle quickly as they were right between teams such as The Smoking Gunns, The Godwinns, and Owen and Yokozuna before them and The New Hart Foundation and The New Age Outlaws after their debut.
Could They Have Been Salvaged?
I’d say that The Headbangers were pretty salvageable during the Attitude Era. Honestly, they just needed to be more involved in the shenanigans of that period and given a regular tag team rival.
Right to Censor would’ve been good opponents to give them something of note in WWE. The gimmick was fine but they needed a regular mouthpiece. Ultimately, they just needed to be more involved in the randomness and wildness of the Era.
They were a good team for the WWE’s approach at this time but it just seemed like they either always existed outside of “Attitude” or were background players.
