Recently, Jon Moxley stepped out of the spotlight of AEW. Despite being in the middle of the AEW World Championship Eliminator Championship tournament, Moxley took the steps to get help. Entering rehab services for issues related to alcohol consumption, he’d be replaced in the tournament by Miro. Since then, AEW has went ahead without one of their biggest stars – and proved to be fine. However, we now have a return date for Jon Moxley in the ring, but it’s not for AEW.
Jon Moxley To Defend The GCW World Championship Against Homicide At Wlrd On GCW
When Homicide would claim the #1 contenders spot in GCW after winning a massive battle royal, there was a lot of hope that the impending match would be set for GCW’s biggest show to date. They’re running Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City, an iconic venue. It’s been sold out for months on hype alone, with a strong card being built up after the fact. Matches like Joey Janela vs. Matt Cardona, Ruby Soho vs. Allie Katch, Jonathan Gresham vs. Blake Christian, and Effy vs. Jeff Jarrett have been all but confirmed – and there is even a chance this is where FTR & The Briscoes finally clash. However, none of those matches are the the main event.
Now we have confirmation from GCW that Jon Moxley vs. Homicide for the GCW World Championship will take place on January 23rd. This alone is big news, as this is a massive match between two veterans of the indies – who both work violent styles. Even with the match not being booked as a deathmatch, blood will be shed. It’s a very fitting return match for Jon Moxley, who last wrestled in October of 2021, defeating Jimmy Jacobs at a ‘The Wrestling Revolver’ event.
A Big Name Challenger For Hangman Page?
However, while Mox on the indies is always incredible – fans are more eager to see him return to AEW. Even as their roster grows, few names are bigger for them than Jon Moxley. He also has an easy route back into the main event – as he never was eliminated from the AEW World Championship Eliminator Championship tournament. Miro took his space, and he was taken out for outside issues. Generally, this would mean Moxley gets another chance to go for the World Championship.
He might be blocked by Bryan Danielson if he tries to walk in and claim a shot, which could give fans the planned tournament finals in the main event of a major episode of AEW Dynamite. Right now, it’s unclear who will challenge Page at Revolution for the title, as it’s not expected that his new feud with Lance Archer will go that long.
