It’s been a year of ups and downs for Lio Rush, despite the fact that we’re not even out of January. He’s announced his plans to leave AEW following a fall out with boss Tony Khan, but also signed a music deal with one of the worlds largest labels in UMG. Now, we can add something else to the bad side of things – as he suffered an injury during his match with Buddy Matthews from Battle of Los Angeles.
Lio Rush Was Injured After A Stomp Gone Wrong – Fans Throwing Drinks Blamed
This came during the second night of action, in one of the first matches of the night. A curb stomp gone wrong would see Rush suffer a shoulder injury. This came after Matthews cut a heel promo before the match, prompting some fans to throw drinks at him. Leaving the ring canvas wet – this was enough to have the stomp go wrong.
Co-owner of PWG and commentator Excalibur reprimanded the fans as a result and they accepted responsibility. The fan who threw the drink was kicked out of the venue. Rush was written off, and while he won the match via a rare DQ for PWG – Matthews moved forward into the tournament, losing to Mike Bailey in the semi-finals. Daniel Garcia claimed the finals win, defeating Bailey.
Update From Rush After The Show
Following the show, we’d get an update from Rush, who would tweet out the following after being taken to hospital after this injury.
“Just being honest with you guys here. I’m not good. But i will be good. And when I’m back, I’ll be dangerous.”
There was some fan concern that this will once again see Rush retire from professional wrestling. He previously retired after an injury scared him, as it left him unable to lift his newborn son. With a music deal now, sticking to the less dangerous world could be a choice that Rush makes – and one that few could fault him for.
However, this tweet makes it clear that Rush will be back – and there will be hell to pay for taking more time away from his career.
