Matt Cardona has fully embraced his new extreme persona since moving on after the WWE released him, and wrestling with GCW has helped him grow even more.
And this week he took it to another level as he channeled Medusa from her WCW debut with the WWE Women’s Championship.
More on that in a second.
Trashing the gold
At GCW Most Notorious, Cardona defeated Rhino but the fun part begins afterwards when Cardona declared himself the ECW TV Champion.
Since Rhino was the last champion roughly twenty some years ago and was never beaten, Cardona just took the next step in what looked like a symbolic gesture.
But it was more than that as he and Chelsea Green returned to the ring at GCW Say You Will with the title and a garbage can.
He went on about how he saw all of the comments online, but didn’t approach Paul Heyman about using the belt. In fact, he said he hasn’t talked to Heyman in over two years.
At that point, he wrote a letter to Heyman where he said all he wanted to do was wrestle, and he was released two days later.
Or so it’s been rumored.
Retiring the belt WCW style
Perhaps knowing it was only a matter of time before the WWE sent their lawyers to stop him from using their property led Cardona and Green to reenact Medusa’s bit or they just wanted to for reasons.
Whatever the reason, he decided to retire the championship once again and he tossed the title belt into the trash can Green held for him and said Heyman can kiss his “Tan a$$.).
This is so full of layers that it’s an amazing moment as well and shocking for various reasons. While it can be argued Cardona only did this to strike back at the WWE, it’s reasonable to expect it was done to simply look edgier and rile the fans up.
Considering he would face Ricky Morton later that night it makes sense. Especially his rendition of N’SYNC’s “Bye, Bye, Bye” to Morton and Joey Janella.
The fact this brought back some WCW memories may color this moment for me and making it more than it is, but it’s a great homage to one of the iconic moments at the start of the Monday Night Wars.
And if Cardona is starting a war with Paul Heyman, I’m looking forward to Heyman’s possible response on Raw.
What do you think about Cardona’s actions?
