Urijah Faber clearly sees himself as more of a coach than a fighter these days, but that doesn’t mean he’s out of action. Coming up on twenty years in the fight game, Faber told The MMA Hour that he’s looking to book a celebratory fight against fellow legend Cub Swanson.
“I told Dana that I’ll be 43 in May, that will be 20 years of combat. I said, ‘The dollar is not worth what it used to be two years ago. So let’s talk again on that front. But I’d be down to throw down and fight.’ … He just said [of the coincidence], ‘That’s crazy.’ It wasn’t like a negotiation, we’re just calling to BS.”
Urijah Faber is “Down to Throw Down” for Legacy Fight Against Cub Swanson
Once upon a time, Faber and Swanson almost fought in earnest. Back before MMA was sanctioned, they were a hair’s breadth from a matchup on reservation land in California. The disparity in pay at the time was what stuck out to Urijah Faber.
“He was trying to make his name.
He just got started, and I think he said no to the fight. I didn’t really know who he was at the time, and I’m glad that he did, because they were going to pay him a couple hundred bucks and they were going to pay me, like, $1,000 at Soboba Casino.”
Urijah Faber and Cub Swanson came up with the sport of MMA, starting out in unsanctioned MMA fights at casinos on the local circuit and eventually making it to the UFC. Faber fought for a UFC title four times, but was never able to secure UFC gold for himself. A career retrospective fight against a fellow veteran that allows Urijah Faber to prove that he’s still got a fighting spirit appeals to the Californian.
“I like Cub a lot. He’s a guy that’s grown as an individual. He’s getting better as a fighter. I would rather be 38 than 43 when we fight, but it sounds like something that would be a lot of fun. I’m always looking for things around my birthday to get my engine going and give me a reason to get in amazing shape.”
Faber also wants to fight with a crowd present, something he missed out on due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I would have fought already over the last couple of years, but I’m all about the whole experience, and I wasn’t going to go sit in a quiet room and fight somebody.
So I’d like to do it with a crowd if that’s the case.”
