For the first time since Hiroshi Tanahashi coined the term “the forbidden door”, WWE have finally taken advantage of the more open landscape of professional wrestling in 2022. They have begun to advertise the Impact Knockouts Champion Mickie James to show up in the Royal Rumble later this month, and James will likely carry outside gold into the WWE ring. However, WWE seems to have plans to open the door once again – but for the men’s Royal Rumble.
Who Could Be This “Unexpected” Name In The Royal Rumble?
With a report coming from WrestleVotes, WWE seems to be planning a surprise entrant into the Men’s Royal Rumble. It will be someone unexpected from outside of the WWE roster – which is a very open group of names.
We can fairly easily rule out anyone signed to All Elite Wrestling, who have been pushing hard to knock WWE from their top spot in the United States. AEW have been open to work with just about all promotions, but have also taken many shots at how WWE operates. If someone from AEW is to show up, it would likely be someone like Christian Cage or Mark Henry – someone who can be considered a WWE legend.
A very common name circulated by fans has been Matt Cardona. The former Zack Ryder has made a splash on the indies in 2021 after becoming a deathmatch icon with his matches against Nick Gage in GCW. Since then, he’s also climbed the card in Impact Wrestling, recently challenging Moose for the Impact Wrestling World Champion. Cardona was released from WWE back in 2020, making his return in 2022 a shocking and unexpected moment.
Another option comes with Moose himself. Bringing in someone who carries a world championship would be a great look for WWE, making the Royal Rumble seem more prestigious once again. Moose also recently called out WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns on Twitter, trying to build hype for a potential encounter between the two dominant heavyweights.
Who do you think this ‘unexpected’ entrant could be? Will WWE scrap these plans before the event? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
