Once again, WWE is honoring the legendary Dusty Rhodes with the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic. This year we have two different tournaments, one for the male talent and another for the female talent. Both will feature eight teams, with the winners going on to get a shot at their division’s tag team championship. We don’t know who will be in the women’s tournament yet, but the eight teams for the men’s division were revealed yesterday – and now we know the four first round matches.
Four Big Matches To Kick Off The Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic
With just eight teams, it’s just three wins to win the cup this year, which makes it easier than ever in a way. However, every match will be harder to win however, with no lacking teams in the field. Starting from the top left of the bracket, we have last year’s winners of MSK taking on Jacket Time. These are two of the top babyface teams in NXT 2.0, and should be a very well fought match.
Malik Blade & Edris Enofe are the underdog team in this year’s tournament, and they have a hard first round test. They will take on the experienced team of Legado Del Fantasma. Blade & Enofe have the hardest path to the finals, seeing as they only got into the tournament after Harland got DQ’d, taking his team with Joe Gacy out of the running.
On the right side of the bracket, Josh Briggs & Brooks Jensen are going to take on Diamond Mine’s Brutus & Julius Creed. This is the heaviest match in the first round, with four proper heavyweights clashing. The Creed Brothers are a personal favorite to win this years tournament, having been incredibly impressive since their debut on NXT 2.0
Finally, Grizzled Young Veterans start their third Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic against the new team of Andre Chase & Bodhi Hayward. This will likely be the NXT in-ring debut of Hayward, having shown up as the star student of Chase University. They have a tough test ahead of them, as Grizzled Young Veterans have made the finals two years running now.
