The NXT Tag Team division has been on auto-pilot the last few months, but the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic brought some new life to it. Adding in a team like MSK (Nash Carter & Wes Lee, fka The Rascalz) and reestablishing Grizzled Young Veterans (James Drake & Zack Gibson) alone did great things for it. These two teams meet tonight in the finals of the 2021 Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic.

They’re polar opposites, with MSK being fast paced high fliers, and Grizzled Young Veterans being tough as nails brawlers with great submission skills. Both teams have incredible tag team chemistry, and this might be the best final match in tournament history. Can MSK keep their good luck rolling, or will Grizzled Young Veteran be recognized as the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic winners?

Nash Carter Gets Isolated By Grizzled Young Veterans

Gibson would start up alongside Carter, and lock up hard. Carter climbed the ropes for leverage, before taking Gibson down with a Headlock Takeover. Gibson snatched the arm, and went to work on taking a limb out. Carter showed his speed, but was driven into the corner by Drake. Drake picked up the slower pace, grabbing a headlock. MSK can’t be allowed to get moving, because as soon as Carter got some speed, he’d hit a twisting clothesline.

Carter got the tag to Lee, got Drake in the corner for a bronco buster, before Lee went for a suplex. Drake got a blind tag from Gibson, who missed a lariat on Lee before taking a pump kick. MSK would cut him down to size, before Carter gave him the double stomp to the back, and Lee soared over the top rope. Carter springboarded off of Lee, taking out Drake, and Gibson tore him down with a lariat.

Back in the ring, Gibson got a neckbreaker, before holding Carter in the corner as Drake dove in. Drake got the camel clutch with a knee in the back for extra pain. Carter was heavily isolated, and took a heavy double lariat for a near fall, Gibson not letting go and keeping the pins coming. He’d try to flip and flop across the ring, before being taken out with a lariat from Drake in the middle of the ring.

    Wee Lee Is Insane

Carter fought in the GYV corner, hit a suplex on Drake and started the long crawl to the tag. Gibson pulled Lee off the apron, before rolling in the ring. Referee was caught up with Lee, and Gibson hit Maximum Skullduggery with Drake for a near fall.

Carter finally dodged a spinning heel kick, and Lee exploded in the ring. He’d take out Drake, and hit the dropkick to the neck of Gibson. With both men on the outside, he soared over the top rope with a senton bomb to take them out. A backflip kick got a near fall, but this one was in the realm of MSK, until Drake grabbed his leg on the top rope, letting Gibson take advantage. MSK were able to regain control and hit a super dropkick on Drake, before focusing on Gibson.

Carter was fired up like we’ve never seen before in NXT, and he’d just beat Gibson into the mat with some ground and pound before a springboard cutter. Lee tagged in, but Gibson threw a throat chop and counted the backflip kick with a running knee. Helter Skelter & a 450 Splash got a near fall, a great combo but it’ll take more than that to keep Lee down.

Soon To Be Recognized As Dusty Cup Winners… Unless

GYV set up Doomsday Device, Lee countering into a roll up for a near fall. Gibson took Hot Hot Heat, before Lee nailed Drake with the reverse rana. They’d both nail dives off the top rope, but Drake kicks out. The finisher was set up, but Gibson pulled the rope down and Lee was taken outside. Lee was hit with a Suicide Dive into a Doomsday Device, maybe ending his night.

Carter would fight off both men with strikes, before taking a powerbomb and backstabber combo. He’d hold on with a two count, but might not have much left in the tank. A slap to the face would be followed by an attempt at Ticket To Mayhem, but Wes Lee saved the day! MSK nail the finish, and win the 2021 Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic!

This was what FTR vs. The Young Bucks wanted to be. It was insane action from bell to bell, without a hiccup in sight. This is how you reestablish the tag team division in NXT, with an excellent tournament and saving the best match for the end. There was no nonsense, just incredible wrestling from bell to bell. Match Rating: 4.5/5 (**** ½)
