After roughly three years spent as henchmen and forgotten talent in AEW, Santana and Ortiz are finally getting some of the spotlight with their feud with Chris Jericho.
While it’s disappointing to see the Inner Circle on the verge of breaking up due to Eddie Kingston’s antics, it’s great that it finally got the spotlight on one of the best tag teams in the world.
With their sudden push onto the stage, it’s got several people wondering if they were buried in AEW and for what reason?
Held back
As LAX in Impact Wrestling, Santana and Ortiz were considered one of the best tag teams in the world and they were popular free agents before AEW signed them.
They were the first to thank Jericho after his championship win at the inaugural pay-per-view, and that was the end to their glory.
They had a few glimpses, but only one shot at the tag team championship and this has led to many fans saying they were purposely held back by those in charge.
Whether or not that’s true is anyone’s guess, but given how Santana and Ortiz could possibly outshine the Young Bucks, and the Young Bucks being Executive Vice Presidents and were in charge of the tag division, has fueled fans’ feelings on this.
New lease
While it could’ve been AEW’s long term plan for Santana and Ortiz’s current feud with Jericho to give them a push, the timing is also curious as a few months back it was announced that Tony Kahn took booking power from the EVPS and has been calling the shots.
There are few things more entertaining or exciting as possible conspiracy theories in professional wrestling, but there are way too many stories about backstage politics in general to expect it not to happen in AEW.
With that being said, the loss of say has been touted as a reason for Cody leaving AEW as there had to be fissure among the founding members on some level, especially since he reportedly kept to himself.
And we can’t ignore reports for the last year or so about there being tension backstage in AEW. While those reports were vague and felt more like speculation than not, there’s a chance they were right.
Whatever the reasons are for their push to take so long, we’re looking forward to Santana and Ortiz stealing the show in the coming weeks and prove they should’ve been more active in the tag team division since day one.
Do you think they were held back or was it the EVPS trying to figure out everything works? Let us know in the comments below.
