For years now, Rockstar Games fans have been speculating and calling for a new Grand Theft Auto. The last game—GTA V—dropped back in 2013 and the developer has focused mainly on the GTA Online portion of the series since that’s the bag at the moment.
As a result, the need for another single-player or story-driven entry in the series was subdued by the studio. Also, interest in the 9-year-old game has stayed alive thanks to a large community of roleplayers who live out adventures and everyday life in Los Santos via custom servers—which actually do GTA Online better than GTA Online in a couple of cases.
Grand Theft Auto 6 Is Officially in Development
Now, Rockstar Games have announced that Grand Theft Auto 6 is now in “active development”. What that actually means could be anything from Rockstar just started working on GTA 6 to significant work that has been done already. Between the release of GTA V to the announcement of GTA 6, Rockstar has worked on Red Dead Redemption 2 and focused heavily on GTA Online.
Also in that time, the poorly-received remasters of the Grand Theft Auto PS2-era classics were worked on by Rockstar’s Grove St. Games studio. However, the recent news is definitely major for fans of the series regardless of how far along development is at the moment. Rockstar’s announcement of GTA 6 is below.
“With the unprecedented longevity of GTAV, we know many of you have been asking us about a new entry in the Grand Theft Auto series. With every new project we embark on, our goal is always to significantly move beyond what we have previously delivered – and we are pleased to confirm that active development for the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series is well underway. We look forward to sharing more as soon as we are ready, so please stay tuned to the Rockstar Newswire for official details.”
