Last night, SANADA finally claimed singles gold in NJPW as he took down Hiroshi Tanahashi to claim the IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship. Tonight alongside the rest of Los Ingobernables de Japon, he has a chance at a victory lap as he faces Hiroshi Tanahashi, Togi Makabe, Tomoaki Honma, and Yuji Nagata.
Massive 48 Person New Japan Cup Announced
Before this match, we’d hear about the New Japan Cup. It’s the biggest ever, at 48 men in the mix. The full field will be revealed soon, with the tournament having the singles champions of NJPW as well as being openweight. Even then, we have to expect some outside names – but there is a lot coming here.
Recently, Tony Khan has been speaking about something game changing for AEW – which is set to be announced soon. We could potentially be seeing some AEW crossover with this tournament. Pro Wrestling NOAH is also possible, after the recent collab show with night three of Wrestle Kingdom. This is all very exciting – and the full field will be announced TOMORROW, alongside the full card for the NJPW 50th Anniversary show.
Los Ingobernables de Japon Rule The Ring In Eight Man Tag Team Action
Back to the action, Tanahashi would look to pick up where he left off with SANADA last night – and they’d lock up in the middle of the ring. They’d sprawl it out, before Hiromu Takahashi got the tag. Great Bash Heel worked over Hiromu, before Tanahashi tagged in and BUSHI had to make the save. Both BUSHI & Hiromu are likely to be in the field of the New Japan Cup with it being openweight.
SANADA would get Tanahashi in the Paradise Lock, before kicking him free with that basement dropkick. A near fall would follow, before SANADA & Tanahashi both agreed to let go of Dragon Screw attempts after all the abuse they did to each other’s knees last night… until Tanahashi hit one and tagged in Nagata.
Justice Knee would land, and Makabe tagged in to meet the fresh Shingo Takagi, who tossed Makabe aside. Honma tagged in and showed the same fight that he showed against Great-O-Khan last night, but the Sliding Lariat took him right down for a near fall. Rocket Koeshi would be met by Pumping Bomber, before Last Of The Dragon closed this match out.
