We often hear about how the WWE promised one thing but didn’t deliver or Vince McMahon changed his mind sometimes hours before a show started.
It happens in the WWE and elsewhere due to injuries, availability, and the crowd, but Miro said he was pitched a WrestleMania match and he didn’t make it to WrestleMania.
Miro said he was pitched a main event WrestleMania match against Bobby Lashley to culminate their rivalry, but now thinks he was lied to.
Not following through
In what was arguable one of the worst storylines of the year, Miro (Rusev in the WWE)’s real life wife Lana left him for Bobby Lashley.
It’s entertainment and the WWE does that type of thing all the time. At this point, Paul Heyman was running the storyline and he may have still been Executive Producer of Raw at the time.
Around this same time, Mike and Maria Kanellis were having their marriage broken up on screen as she was pregnant with another man’s child and derided Mike’s ability like Lana did Rusev’s.
Miro talked about this and what he was told by the WWE on The Kurt Angle Show. Special thanks to 411mania.com for the transcript.
“I was lied to. I was brought up for the spot to have a WrestleMania main event match. That’s what I was pitched. I don’t think I even made it to WrestleMania. Yeah, and it’s not like I didn’t do something they wanted me to, I did everything they wanted. I thought it was still over with the people.
“I think it started rocky. I don’t even know why we started rocky. I expressed my opinion when Maria Kanellis came out and was saying that she’s pregnant by somebody or something like that. I told Paul Heyman, I’m like, ‘This is gonna get people confused. People are not gonna like this.’ He did not care. He blamed her for that. ‘She did not word it right or whatnot. They do it in Knoxville, Tennessee, trust me. I love Knoxville, Tennessee. But next week we’re in Chicago, whatever. Why don’t we save it for Chicago or something? Why do it in front of 2,000 people instead of 20,000?”
Ending on a whimper
Bobby Lashley talked about this in 2020 and he admitted they had some real heat and fans wanted to see Rusev destroy him but it didn’t happen.
That’s probably the most frustrating part for us. While the storyline felt like it was trying too hard with Liv Morgan getting involved as Lana’s former lover, we wanted to see an actual match between them happen.
After months of verbal back and forths and the occasional confrontation, we were ready for the payoff and it didn’t happen, and even Lashley admitted he didn’t know why as he thought they’d have some good matches together.
