With Seth Rollins losing yet another attempt to get his WrestleMania moment and threatening to hold Raw captive next week until he gets his way, the time for Cody Rhodes to enter the picture is perfect.
On our Raw coverage, we speculated that Cody would be a perfect fit as part of higher management and Adam Pearce and Sonya Deville’s boss.
He could then respond to Rollins’ threats personally next week by coming out in a surprise entrance to confront Rollins and inform him he’s got his wish, and unfortunately Rollins will have to face him as a consequence.
But it looks like our idea could be way off if Dave Meltzer is correct about the WWE’s plans.
Debuting WrestleMania
Cody signing with the WWE was reported last week, and so was the belief he won’t debut until WrestleMania 38 weekend, at which time he’d return to the ring since leaving the WWE in 2016.
At the time, he felt underutilized and like he wasn’t part of any plans, so he moved on. On parting, he talked about how Triple H seemed to take his leaving personally as Wikipedia.org shared.
“Hunter [Triple H] took it very personally because he had done so much for my dad at NXT. There was one conversation where he said, ‘I’m shocked that you feel this way after everything I’ve done for your family.’ But I told him, ‘I’m not my dad. I can’t stay here out of loyalty to you for giving my dad a job in 2005. I get it, and the little boy in me really appreciates what you did for my dad. But I’m not him. He’s not here anymore. I’ve got to be me.’ I think Hunter, he’s been in wrestling long enough that he knew, ‘Oh, this is a real one. He’s not asking for more money. He’s not asking for a title shot. Nothing would matter at this point.; I let the burn get too bad before I said anything, if that makes any sense.”
Since then, Cody has claimed there were no grudges between him and the WWE, though some of the things he said and did in AEW could be taken otherwise.
But the WWE is always willing to bring someone back if they can make the company money, but Cody’s not expected to appear on WWE TV until he comes out WrestleMania.
Meltzer reported this will be so he’s a surprise to the WWE fans much as the Hardy Boyz return a few years ago at WrestleMania.
Basically, they want to hit a homerun at the biggest event of the year and create a moment where they “stole” a former EVP and Founding Father of AEW, their chief rival.
