In the grand scheme of things, most wouldn’t think Impact Wrestling is a blip on WWE’s radar aside form trying to sign their talent like every company does to each other.
But Impact has been growing over the last year or two and they’ve been putting on shows that have been among the business’ best lately.
Because of that, it struck me odd that Paul Heyman would mention on this past WWE Raw that he set a championship match up on March 5 at Madison Square Garden against Bobby Lashley.
There have been reports that Lashley has an injured shoulder and will miss WrestleMania, and Heyman played that up some when he said if Lashley can’t pass the concussion protocol then he’ll find someone to make it a match worthy of MSG.
Only the house shows at MSG are considered canon by the WWE, so that puts some weight on Heyman’s worlds.
And it led to me having a couple of questions as March 5 is also Impact’s event Sacrifice where, at the time, the only match listed was NJPW’s Jay White facing off with the newly returned Alex Shelley.
Since then, the Knockouts and X-Division Championship matches have been added, but there’s something else that we thought of
Cody Rhodes to debut at MSG
There hasn’t been any news about Cody Rhodes signing, but why else make a big deal out of that date? It’d make more sense to have him show up on Raw or Smackdown.
Which they most likely will in the next week unless they plan to televise the MSG show on Peacock or in a special TV segment since its on Saturday.
It’ll establish Cody as a legitimate threat before he loses to Lesnar by disqualification to keep them both strong (this is the WWE) as they’ve done repeatedly lately.
People will be talking and come March 5, the WWE will dominate the news cycle and Impact Wrestling will be an after thought like they are to most fans watching WWE or AEW.
This is pure speculation on our part, but it would be the big splash the WWE has failed to make with their celebrity additions and they could cite their social media traffic like normal and may even get a boost in ratings.
It would also strike a blow to Impact Wrestling when Sacrifice will be held.
It’d be a sound move on WWE’s part, especially if they can keep signing Cody a secret, so we’ll have to wait and see if we’re right or it was just an odd coincidence.
