Prince William has been slammed by supporters of Meghan Markle, amongst others, in response to his comments on the current Russia- Ukraine War – but has the Duke of Cambridge been misunderstood?
Prince William Slammed For His ‘Dehumanizing’ Comments On The Russia-Ukraine War
While William has expressed his support for Ukraine, the manner in which he set that up has been called into question. As a result, Prince William has been accused of making insensitive remarks by suggesting that war in Europe was the last thing that people had expected.
Therefore, in doing so, he was accused of dehumanizing all those that had suffered war outside of Europe. In a statement at the time, William had said: “Britons were more used to seeing conflict in Africa and Asia.
“It’s very alien to see this in Europe. We are all behind you.” These comments did not go down well with supporters of Meghan Markle.
They were of the view that the Meghan Markle had been unfairly slammed for expressing her support for Ukraine with Prince Harry at the NAACP awards. Much in the same way, William should be given the same treatment and called out for insensitivity.
One supporter wrote: “Prince William’s own mother visited Bosnia in 1997, shortly before her death. Are you telling me he wasn’t aware of the war and genocide that was raging on at that time?”
Just when you thought that was bad enough, things continued to get worse online. A certain subset of people demanded that Prince William should apologize and retract his statement. Meanwhile, other organizations got involved as they felt his comments were out of touch.
A representative on behalf of The Arab and Middle Eastern Journalists Association had this to say: “It dehumanizes and renders their experience with war as somehow normal and expected.
“Civilian casualties and displacement in other countries are equally as abhorrent as they are in Ukraine.”
Prince William certainly knows that his comments were not meant to be interpreted in that way, but given the reaction that has followed as a result, it is probably wise that he considers his words carefully going forward.
