Last year, Will Ospreay was finally able to win the New Japan Cup. Now looking to make for back-to-back victories, The Kingpin of The Commonwealth is back in Japan to kick off what he hopes is another successful tournament. Kicking things off, he has someone he’s not faced since his time as a Junior Heavyweight – in Jet Black Deathmask himself, BUSHI.
Their match at Power Struggle 2019 is considered to be one of the best in the career of BUSHI – but for Ospreay was just another day. Since then, Will Ospreay has won the Rev Pro Undisputed British Heavyweight Championship and IWGP World Heavyweight Championship. BUSHI is a major underdog coming into this match, but every bracket needs an upset.
BUSHI Gets The Jump On Will Ospreay
BUSHI would start fast with a shotgun dropkick, sending Ospreay to the outside. He’d follow up with a suicide dive to the outside, right into the New Japan Cup itself. BUSHI would keep the pressure on, whipping Ospreay into the barricade as hard as he possibly could.
Back in the ring, BUSHI nailed a neckbreaker for a one count, before stomping away on the neck of Ospreay. Ospreay was finally able to get some control, and showed BUSHI what the barricades felt like. Slowing down the pace, Ospreay would hit a heavy handed chop before tearing the shirt of BUSHI off his back.
After a bodyslam, Ospreay would hit the elbow drop for a two count. BUSHI would fire back with a hurricanrana out of the corner, and followed up with a missile dropkick. Ospreay slipped outside, and BUSHI followed by vaulting the top rope and hitting the hurricanrana. A DDT in the middle of the ring would grant BUSHI a near fall.
Referees Are Dropping Like Flies
Not to be outdone, Ospreay would hit a wicked spinning backbreaker, before kicking BUSHI in the face twice. OsCutter was set up, but BUSHI pulled the referee into the way to avoid the blow. Even without a referee, Ospreay would keep things in the ring and look for Hidden Blade, only to take the basement dropkick.
BUSHI hit a snap neckbreaker, but as he looked for MX – the second referee would be pulled into the way. This time, BUSHI was sent to the outside, before Ospreay hit a plancha to the floor. A third referee made their way to the ring, and Ospreay would look for the hook kick. BUSHI dodged and looked for the mist… and got the referee.
Ospreay threw a kick, and the referee was out cold. We needed another referee, and OsCutter was blocked into a backstabber. MX was blocked, and OsCutter landed for a two count! Stormbreaker was blocked into the BUSHI Roll – almost stealing the win in the process. Lungblower was countered into a high angle powerbomb, before Hidden Blade would end this match.
Will Ospreay will now meet El Phantasmo on March 12 in Aichi. Can he win back to back New Japan Cups? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
