Last year, Will Ospreay was able to defeat SANADA on his way to winning the New Japan Cup – but SANADA has improved since then. Having since won his first singles championship, SANADA is determined to keep pushing forward in 2022 – and finally beating Will Ospreay and winning the New Japan Cup could be just what that takes.
SANADA Tries To Outwrestle Will Ospreay
SANADA would fight off a wrist lock from Ospreay to start the match, only to end up in a Hammerlock. Ospreay would have his ankle picked before having SANADA attack the leg. Going back to the top wrist lock, Ospreay would control the movements of SANADA, only to end up in a side headlock.
Breaking free, Ospreay would toss SANADA throat first off the top rope before hitting a big boot to send SANADA out of the floor. Using the barricade to his advantage, Ospreay would maintain control of the match – before going after the arm in the ring. Taking influence from TJP, Ospreay would nail the armbreaker in the ring – getting a two count.
SANADA would take a heavy handed chop, before sending Ospreay tumbling with a basement dropkick. Ospreay tried to apply the Paradise Lock, only for SANADA to show him how it’s done. Dropkick would free Ospreay, before he slipped outside. SANADA followed and hit a backdrop on the apron.
Referee Has To Stop The Match
Back into the ring, both men would exchange forearm shots – before rolling elbows would be thrown. Spin kick from SANADA was met by a Spanish Fly from Ospreay – getting a two count. Stormbreaker was blocked with a close fall off the O’Conner Roll.
SANADA would block the OsCutter, before Ospreay looked for a shooting star press – and both men took knee strikes. Skull End was applied, and Ospreay seemed to be out as SANADA looked for the moonsault. Ospreay got his knees up, before nailing the Hidden Blade.
Hammer & Anvil elbows would land, before Ospreay would continue to pummel \l SANADA with elbow strikes. The referee called for the bell, forcing the stoppage. Will Ospreay will now face Zack Sabre Jr. in the quarterfinals.
