The career of Matthew Rehwoldt, better known to WWE fans as Aiden English – has been an interesting one to watch unfold. Getting his start with WWE as part of the NXT brand, he would win the NXT Tag Team Championships alongside Simon Gotch as part of the Vaudevillians, a success they were unable to re-create on the WWE main roster.
From Rusev Day To Commentary, Aiden English Found Ways To Shine In WWE And Beyond
English would get his most popular run in WWE alongside Rusev, as part of the wildly popular ‘Rusev Day’ gimmick, which had fans clamouring for them to become tag team champions. That also never happened, and English would eventually find himself moved to the commentary desk before being released in 2020.
Since then, English has been able to make his way to both Impact Wrestling and New Japan Pro Wrestling, working as one of the main commentators for both Impact Wrestling alongside Tom Hannifan and NJPW Strong alongside Ian Riccaboni. He’s been a great fit on both shows, which struggled with commentary in recent years. Rehwoldt has also gotten into the ring for both Impact & NJPW.
Would Only Return To WWE As Commentator
However, during an appearance on the Table Talk podcast – Rehwoldt would be asked about what it would take to get him back into WWE. Namely, would he repackage himself to try and make a run for singles gold. Rehwoldt would have the following response.
“I thought about this. If I were to go back to WWE, I wouldn’t go back as a wrestler. I would not return as a wrestler. This sounds pessimistic, but I know how I am perceived as a wrestler given who’s running the show right now.
That’s fine, and it’s hard to change that perception. As a broadcaster, I know what I bring to the table so I would gladly love to work with Michael Cole, Corey Graves, Byron Saxton, Vic Joseph, and all those guys on all their shows who do such a phenomenal job.”
