In the recent UFC Vegas 51 event, we were able to watch some exciting and interesting fights, however, there were several irregularities as well.
The greatest judgment for this omission came from the Ex-Heavyweight Champion, now commentary Daniel Cormier. He was furious. He showed his disappointment after the winners were announced.
Is the UFC Starting To Tolerate Illegal Shots? Daniel Cormier Is Surprised By The Incompetence Of The Judges!
Daniel DC Cormier said: “Listen, so you’re told the rules in the locker room, right. They say the strike’s unintentional. But everything you throw in there is with intent, so how do you call it unintentional and you don’t disqualify it? Now I’m not saying disqualify Borralho or disqualify the guy earlier (Buday), but everything you throw is with intent to finish the fight. So how do you call it unintentional?”
And to be honest he has a point. Even if unintentional the strike happened. The fighters are supposed to have control of their hands and legs at all times. This is not a bar fight so you can just wave your hands and pray to hit someone where it will hurt him.
This is MMA, it’s a combat sport that incorporates many different combat sports and other fighting disciplines together. Disciplines, the word speaks itself, the fighters need to have control over their bodies and minds at all times. If an illegal strike is done, that’s the end. It means that the fighter lost control and he should be disqualified from the bout.
In the UFC Vegas 51 event, two such examples happened and passed unsanctioned. This left many UFC fans disappointed in the judges of the UFC. Is the biggest MMA promotion in the world starting to lose its edge?
Gadzhi Omargadzhiev was unable to continue the fight due to an illegal strike that he received. What happened was – Borralho delivered a knee shot to Omargadzhiev’s torso while he was still with his hands on the canvas – making him a ‘downed’ opponent. He should have been disqualified. They deducted a point from him only, and he won by TKO.
Boralho himself after the fight accepts his mistake and apologized: “I didn’t want to win like this. But I was dominating the entire fight. I think I did a great job. I didn’t see that he was down, so I’m sorry to everyone. I’m sorry for Gadzhi and his team. I didn’t want to win like that.”
Your sorry does not mean much to us, the UFC fans, or Gadzhi’s team. You should have been disqualified. And that is the end of the conversation.
Once more, we saw an irregularity in the Martin Buday vs Chris Barnett fight.
Martin Buday was not disqualified after landing an illegal elbow to Chris Barnett’s back of the head. This is a VERY dangerous blow. It might have ended very badly for Chris. Luckily he did not suffer any great consequences from the hit. Again, the illegal elbow lander won the fight, when he was really to be disqualified.
We can conclude that the UFC needs to tighten its boundaries and be strict against irregularities like this. This puts in question the credibility of the organization.
