Meghan Markle has once again been called out on the basis that she uses her Royal title.
Meghan Markle Accused Of Breaking US Law By Using Her Royal Title-‘Constitutionally Not Allowed’
As part of her Royal exit, there were no reported restrictions on the her and Prince Harry being able to use their titles. However, given the nature of their comments since they departed the Royal family, this has now been called into question.
The couple’s highly controversial interview with Oprah Winfrey in which the Royal family were criticised, including an accusation that someone had directed concerns over Archie’s skin colour did not help matters.
To make things even more inflammatory, Meghan disclosed that she was driven to having suicidal thoughts. Thereafter, the couple managed to secure lucrative deals with Netflix and Spotify, which has been seen as an attempt to live off the name of the Royal family.
Nile Gardiner, a former advisor to British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, had this to say: “Simply incredible that Meghan Markle still retains a Royal title after all she has done to insult and attack the British Monarchy.”
Despite the emotions involved, from a practical point of view, United States law prohibits the use of any Royal titles. The United States is a constitutional Republic, and therefore does not recognise any head of state.
In reality, however, this would only become a problem if Meghan sought to get herself involved in United States politics and use her influence through the title as a way to make policy changes. The response from the public on social media was mixed.
A subset of people called for the immediate banning of the title, given that Meghan had already attempted to get involved in US political affairs as shown by her letter to Nancy Pelosi advocating paid parental leave.
Meanwhile, others were of the view that the title was just symbolic. One person wrote: “It’s incredible that she as an American is using it in the US where constitutionally not allowed, and nobody is stopping her.”
Time will tell if Meghan Markle holds onto her titles. So there you have it folks. What did you think about all of this? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
