Political commentator Marina Purkiss has shockingly called for the imposition of a republic, with the resulting consequences that the monarchy be abolished.

These comments arrive on the back end of a growing anti-monarchy sentiment that has been emerging of late. Prince Andrew’s recent sexual assault case against Virginia Giuffre has not helped matters.
Not only that, but Prince William and Kate Middleton’s Royal tour of the Caribbean was also marred by controversy with protests emerging in Jamaica, as a result of the couple’s presence.
This was on the basis that the citizens were outraged over the Royal family’s role in the slave trade. That is why Marina felt that the monarchy could not stand up to the current scrutiny.
In an appearance on ‘The Jeremy Vine’ show, she said: “Charles is currently being investigated by the Met Police for this cash for honours scandal. Her other son, Prince Andrew, don’t get me started.
“The idea that these people are supposed to be beacons of morality, to show us the way of how to live our lives, they’re chosen by God via this divine right of kings to lord it over us is nonsense.”
And in line with that reasoning, Marina expanded on how she felt the Royal family was now an outdated institution.
After all, at a time where people are struggling around the globe to make ends meet, as a result of the economic consequences of the pandemic, it is becoming increasingly more difficult to justify the monarchy’s presence.
Although some may argue that the institution provides some much-needed boost for tourism, in reality nothing could be further from the truth, at least according to Marina.
She added: “The idea of royalty, to me, is fantasy. It should be put in a box with fairies and goblins and dwarves. It’s nonsense, it’s just nonsense. I can’t believe we all play around this charade.
