It seems odd to think the man many consider the top talent and even savior for AEW has heat backstage, but that could be the case if Dave Meltzer’s right.
AEW seemed to pull off a major coup when they signed CM Punk after he was away from the business for several years.
Punk is their biggest anti-WWE banner waver as he has very few good things to say about his time in the company, and fans often believed he wasn’t a nice person while he worked there.
That perception has changed for many since he joined AEW, and there’s every reason to think his mood is indicative of the stress and politics of the workplace.
Winning fans over
It’s safe to say that Punk is the biggest star in AEW at the moment, and his winning the AEW World Championship is indicative of that as the title doesn’t change hands as often as with other companies.
He appears to have turned things around as negative public stories about him are virtually nonexistent, but on AEW Dynamite heading into Double of Nothing, Adam Page ripped into him.
Page was full of rage and went on about Punk not being as good a person outside of the ring, and the exchange reminded Dave Meltzer of Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart in 1997 when the pair had real life heat.

“This was to me almost like and I’m not saying it was as good as this, but to me, it reminded me of when Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels in 1997 did a face-to-face, it was probably designed like this, ‘the more you know, the more it meant.’ When Bret and Shawn did that stuff, I knew everything was going on…backstage. I remember watching this going like, ‘holy sh**.’ It’s not like they’re shooting, but there’s a level of reality to this that the people watching on television do not know. This had the same vibe to it.”
Bryan Alvarez recapped Page’s promo and how Page said he wasn’t just going to beat Punk for himself or the title, but for the locker room.

AEW’s Outsiders?
While the promo stirred up fans to debate whether it was a work or legitimate heat between the two, they readied for their match at Double of Nothing, which CM Punk won.
After the broadcast ended, FTR reportedly came out and hoisted Punk onto their shoulders.
Punk recently drew a lot of criticism for comparing the arrival of Bryan Danielson and Adam Cole to Scott Hall and Kevin Nash going to WCW.
It’s not a close comparison as Hall and Nash helped change the landscape of professional wrestling, but it could be AEW’s plan to have Punk lead a revolution of sorts with FTR as his Outsiders.
That would place Punk in a similar position Hulk Hogan had as leader of the nWo. Considering how much Punk says he hates Hogan, this could be an interesting storyline.
Do you think this is Tony Kahn’s plan for the three of them, or was it a spur of the moment thing like the Curtain Call where FTR showed support for a fellow ex-WWE talent? Let us know in the comments below.
