Queen Elizabeth II is set to miss the State Opening of Parliament on the grounds of poor health.
Mass Concern As Queen Elizabeth II Will Miss The ‘State Opening of Parliament’ Due To ‘Episodic Mobility Problems’
The event is held annually, which is accompanied by the Queen’s speech that sets out what the current government’s agenda is going to be.
And given that the event is so synonymous in British politics, seeing the monarch miss out will invariably raise a lot of concern over her health.
In an official statement given on behalf of the monarch, a representative said: “[The Queen] continues to experience episodic mobility problems.
“[After] consultation with her doctors, [she has] reluctantly decided that she will not attend the State Opening of Parliament tomorrow.”
As a result, Prince Charles is set to step in her place alongside Kate Middleton. This is as to be expected, with Charles next in line to the throne.
Meanwhile, Kate has taken on a leading role in the Royal family amid the monarch’s poor health, as well as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s departure from the institution in 2020.
And yet, this prospect is worrying for the following reasons. First of all, the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee is set to go ahead on Thursday, 2nd June 2022.
This event marks her being in charge for 70 years. Therefore, the last thing that people will want to hear is the monarch becoming unwell just prior to this.
Secondly, if the monarch is not able to attend, then what would happen? With Harry and Meghan being banned from the palace balcony, it would leave the Royal family short of options.
There is still a month for the Queen to recover. And in the meantime, the focus should be on making sure that she is in good condition to be able to make the event.
If that means she will have to miss out on some Royal engagements in the process, then so be it. After all, celebrating 70 years in charge is a one-off event.
