The Royal Mint has disclosed that Prince William‘s face will appear on the £5 coin. This gesture is in honour of the Duke’s 40th birthday, which will be marked on June 21st, 2022. The Royal Mint has never before issued a coin with only the Duke of Cambridge on it, making this his first solo appearance. The coin’s picture rests on a photograph of Prince William, shot in 2018 at the house of the UK Ambassador in Amman, Jordan.

Meanwhile, royal fans are a little perplexed by how William is pictured on the new coin. Lots of reactions were made on the micro-blogging platform Twitter. One fan penned, “Whoever engraved this coin were kind enough to give William a bit more hair than he actually has got!!” Another user remarked, “The £5 coin to mark Prince William’s 40th birthday has more hair than he does.”

Speaking about the special coin, Clare Maclennan, director of commemorative coins at the Royal Mint, said, “The elegant design features a portrait of HRH alongside his royal cypher and the number 40, which pays homage to the maturity and grace of the prince who has become a senior member of the royal family, a devoted husband and a loving father of three, through the eyes of the world.
Marking this extra special occasion, we have also struck a limited edition gold coin made with 5oz of fine gold and struck in high relief to elevate the artistry of the design.” The director also added that the coin is made from a blend of creative craftsmanship and uniqueness that makes it an eye-catching token for everyone.
Together with the redecorated £5 coin, a limited edition two-coin collection will be launched. The set will offer a 0.25oz gold celebration coin and a 1982 sovereign coin.
