Earlier this week, we saw a batch of releases from WWE, centered around their NXT brand. Some big names like Dexter Lumis, Malcolm Bivens & Dakota Kai were cut, but there was one name that was expecting to be released as well. Roderick Strong has been in NXT since 2016, but despite no plans to be moved to the main roster – and having requested his release, Strong remains with the company.
Strong Links To AEW Might Have Kept Him In WWE
Right now, Strong has a lot of links to AEW – which could be a reason for him being kept under WWE contract. His wife Marina Shafir has been wrestling for AEW since 2021, as are is former Undisputed Era factionmates, Adam Cole, Bobby Fish, and Kyle O’Reilly. Add in him being close friends with The Young Bucks, and the second he’s free from WWE – you might as well start a countdown to a ‘Roderick Strong is All Elite’ post from Tony Khan.
As it stands, Roderick Strong signed a new deal with WWE in mid-2021. This was before the release of Bobby Fish, and Kyle O’Reilly & Adam Cole finishing up with the company. Had Strong known how the rest of 2021 would go for the NXT brand, it’s highly likely he would have not opted to stick around.
WWE stated the reason for keeping Strong around was due to having “creative plans in place for him.” He remains a member of the Diamond Mine faction, and is now the mouthpiece of the faction following the release of Malcolm Bivens. Strong will hopefully thrive in NXT 2.0, and won’t be pushed to the side in favour of younger talent. As of the time of writing, his last major match was a loss to Ilja Dragunov in NXT UK, a match which had the NXT UK Championship on the line.
