In a wild true crime story, a 71-year-old blogger and novelist has been found guilty of murdering her husband—after writing a blog post titled “How to Murder Your Husband”. The verdict against Nancy Crampton Brophy came down on Wednesday, May 25, 2022.
“How to Murder Your Husband” Blogger and Romance Novelist Found Guilty of Murdering Her Husband in 2018
In June 2018, Nancy Crampton Brophy went to the Oregon Culinary Institute where her husband worked. She was armed with a Glock 9mm and was spotted on security cameras at the cooking school before Daniel Brophy showed up. After shooting him twice in the heart, she left the scene and was spotted once again.
As it is often said, criminals always return to the scene of the crime. For the third time, those same cameras caught Nancy Crampton Brophy returning after the shooting in the same car she rode to the scene to murder him. By that time, co-workers had already called the police. She would lie to police officers and tell them she was at home at the time of his murder.
Three days after Daniel Brophy’s death, Nancy attempted to collect on his life insurance policy. According to prosecutors, the Brophys were in debt as $35,000 was drawn from Daniel’s 401K to cover their mortgage and their credit cards.
Nancy Crampton Brophy’s defense for being at the scene of the murder earlier in the day was simply that she didn’t recall—a “memory hole” as she called it. She maintained that she didn’t kill her husband saying “I know I didn’t go in the building because I know I didn’t kill Dan. I know that for a fact.”
Multnomah County Senior Deputy DA Shawn Overstreet weighed in on the verdict in a statement:
“I applaud the thoughtfulness, compassion, and patience of the jury during what was a strenuous eight-week trial that included an array of expert witnesses, witnesses who were there the day Daniel Brophy lost his life, individuals who knew the Brophy’s, and the defendant herself. I believe their verdict served the interest of justice today.”
Crampton Brophy will receive her sentence on Monday, June 13 at 9 AM.
