The card for the biggest crossover card of the year is finally starting to take shape. Last night on AEW Dynamite, we got confirmation that CM Punk vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi for the AEW World Championship would be in the main event slot for the upcoming AEW x NJPW PPV, titled Forbidden Door. This also confirmed that the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship would be defended, instead of getting a champion vs. champion match. We also might already know who will face Kazuchika Okada as he defends the belt on June 26th.
Hangman Page Makes Sense To Challenge Either Kazuchika Okada or Jay White On June 26th
The current planned challenger for the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship at Forbidden Door, according to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer – is Hangman Page. Just a few weeks after losing the AEW World Championship, he will get a chance to redeem himself by going against one of, if not the best in the world today.
This makes sense, as Page has essentially been positioned as the ‘Ace of AEW’, much like how Tanahashi is the ‘Ace of NJPW’. They are both men who can enter a huge match, give a great performance, and even if they lose – maintain their fan favourite status. There is also a chance that Jay White claims the belt before Forbidden Door, being the next challenger for Okada – and Page would make equal sense as a challenger to White, given their BULLET CLUB history.
Either of those matches will be incredible, but both will likely end with Page looking up at the lights of the United Center, taking a second crushing loss in about a month. The build to this match will likely start next week, as Page takes on NJPW’s David Finlay on AEW Dynamite.
Other Matches Have Been Teased
Some other potential matches have also been set up. Jon Moxley has unfinished business with Will Ospreay, who’s status on the card is unclear due to currently battling a kidney infection. Great-O-Khan & Jeff Cobb attacked FTR and looked to want to claim the ROH World Tag Team Championships. Sammy Guevara has teased challenging the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion at the event.
These are just a handful of matches, and as this month progresses – we can expect to see more teased and announced for the event. Are you excited for Forbidden Door? What matches do you hope to see? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
