FTR might have plans to never split as a tag team – but tonight they meet in a rare singles match. With a spot in the Owen Hart Memorial Cup on the line tonight, these two will leave it all in the ring – and try to prove just who the better singles wrestler is tonight.
Dax Harwood has a more defined AEW singles history, facing the likes of CM Punk & Jungle Boy – but tonight Wheeler seeks to prove he’s no slouch. Wheeler argues that he will have the advantage despite not wrestling a singles match in two years – as he’s not as beaten up as Harwood is.
FTR Meet In A First Time Ever Singles Match
Both men hit the ring as a team, and started things off with a tight lockup in the middle of the ring. It was a stalemate, before Harwood grabbed a headlock. Wheeler tried to block into a wrist lock, and after some resistance he’d wrestle Harwood to the mat. They’d grapple for control on the mat, before coming to a stalemate.
A handshake would show their respect for each other, before Wheeler grabbed another wrist lock. Wheeler was thrown off the ropes and taken down with a hip toss, but came back fast with an arm drag. Harwood put a thumb in the eye of Wheeler, and tensions would start to rise. Tempers would rise, and Wheeler came back with some heavy strikes.
A spear near the ropes would take Harwoods breath away, before Wheeler laid in a set of heavy handed chops. Harwood placed Wheeler on the top rope, nailing two chops and a superplex. Going to the top rope, Harwood looked for a big splash – but got nothing but canvas. Harwood rolled to the apron, but was hit with a baseball slide dropkick.
Dax Harwood Gets The Control In The End
Wheeler would follow Harwood to the outside, and tossed his partner back into the ring. More strikes would follow, but this just fired ‘Dax The Axe’ up. A trio of German Suplexes would come from Wheeler, before Harwood hit one of his own. Both men would collide in the middle of the ring as they looked for strikes, before Harwood got a near fall off a rollup.
A slingshot powerbomb would see Wheeler counter into a rana for a near fall, before Harwood would block a Victory Roll attempt. Wheeler would hit a piledriver, but was only able to get two. Harwood was set up on the top rope for a super backdrop, but was able to reverse in midair to land on top for a near fall.
Both men would roll out to the floor after the impact, but they were able to break the referees ten count. Harwood looked for the Sharpshooter in the ring, but Wheeler would counter into a roll up – only for Harwood to end up on top for the victory!
Both men were overcome with emotion following this match, but Cash Wheeler will gladly cheer on his best friend in the tournament. Dax Harwood joins Adam Cole, Kyle O’Reilly and Samoa Joe in the field.
CM Punk vs. Hangman Page Set For Double Or Nothing
Following this match, we’d get a major announcement – with CM Punk set to face Hangman Page for the AEW World Heavyweight Championship at Double or Nothing. Punk wondered for a while if he could still do this, but he’s proven he’s as great as ever in the ring.
Everyone he’s faced in AEW has been a warm up for Double or Nothing. He doesn’t promise a win – but he will give 100%. In Las Vegas, he will bet on himself – and Page better be ready for the fight of his career.
