Earlier today, we saw an incredible back and forth match over the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship. Taiji Ishimori would successfully defend his championship against Best of The Super Juniors winner Hiromu Takahashi. After the bell, he declared that there are no more viable challengers left for him to face – only for a song that fans haven’t heard in three years to sound. KUSHIDA would return to NJPW,
KUSHIDA Is Ready To Make His Place In NJPW Again
During a backstage interview, KUSHIDA would explain the following.
“I literally just signed my NJPW contract. Right now I’m still living in Orlando, Florida, but I’ll be moving to Los Angeles to make it easier to travel back and forth between there and Japan. I want to use the benefit of my experience and put the rest of my efforts and pro-wrestling life into furthering NJPW around the world.
Antonio Inoki once said “it’s better to make the jungle than it is to protect it”. I think we’re on the verge of something really cool here. I’m excited for it. I left the junior heavyweight division three and a half years ago, and Taiji Ishimori, Hiromu Takahashi, El Desperado have pushed the division up. They sold the place out tonight, and had this incredible match. So if I don’t take that belt, then there isn’t a place for me in NJPW. To make a place for myself, I’ll give it all I’ve got.”
He would go on to explain that his plan is to finish his career in NJPW. He’s a former six time IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion, two time Best of the Super Juniors winner, and one time winner of the Super J-Cup.
His WWE Run Was Not Fantastic
For the past three years, KUSHIDA has been wrestling in WWE as part of their NXT brand. He signed in 2019, and after moving his family to America – would get a push as an opponent of WALTER. He’d proceed to wrestle Johnny Gargano for the NXT North American Championship, and would win the NXT Cruiserweight Championship before his release.
It wasn’t the run people expected from KUSHIDA in WWE, but that’s more on bad timing. He came into the company near the end of the Black & Gold era, and would never get the main event NXT Championship reign he deserved. However, KUSHIDA is now back where he belongs – and some great matches will be on the horizon.
