Two former veteran WWE referees died as the wrestling world lost David Hebner on June 17, 2022, and Tim White on June 19. White is well-known for having been Andre the Giant’s agent, a duty he took up in 1985. He was promoted to a full-time referee in 1993, following Andre’s death.
The Wrestling World Loses Former Veteran WWE Referee Tim White
One match you’ll definitely remember him officiating includes the iconic second Hell in a Cell match between The Undertaker and Mankind as well as the Cell match between Triple H and Chris Jericho in 2002. It would be in this match that White injured his shoulder and had to step away from his referee duties.
He was moved backstage to assist in different capacities, mainly as a road agent for the SmackDown brand. White returned in 2004 for WrestleMania XX but re-injured his shoulder during Chris Jericho vs. Christian while taking the last pinfall of the bout and had to retire.
Outside of Hell in a Cell, White took one of the best Stone Cold Stunners ever:
Also of note, Tim White ran the Friendly Tap—love this name for a bar—in his hometown of Cumberland, Rhode Island. The bar would be the site of a few segments including the controversial “Lunchtime Suicide” in 2005 where he was depicted as being suicidal over the Hell in a Cell costing him his refereeing career but always botching his suicide attempts.
White would remain with WWE until he was released in early 2009. A year later he was the first recipient of the “New England Icon Award” at the 2010 New England Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame and Fan Fest. The ceremony honors performers who contributed to and represented the New England wrestling scene.
Tim White was 68 years old at the time of his death.
