We’re just a few days away from Forbidden Door, and it’s a show that has really been shaped by injuries. Hiroshi Tanahashi will battle Jon Moxley for the Interim AEW World Championship, due to CM Punk breaking his foot. Zack Sabre Jr. will wrestle a mystery opponent, as Bryan Danielson will not make its way into the event. Now, the AEW All Atlantic Championship match will have a small change, as Tomohiro Ishii is out of the match.

Tomohiro Ishii Has Injured His Left Knee, Will Miss Forbidden Door

NJPW would post the following update to NJPW1972.com, detailing the injury to ‘The Stone Pitbull’.

“Tomohiro Ishii, who was scheduled to compete on June 26 at AEWxNJPW Presents Forbidden Door, has sustained a left knee injury and is not medically cleared to compete.

We apologise to fans who were looking forward to seeing Ishii wrestle and appreciate your understanding.

After a hard fought qualifying match in Korakuen Hall on June 21, Clark Connors will take Ishii’s place in the All-Atlantic Championship four way at Forbidden Door.”

The new match for Forbidden Door is Miro vs. PAC vs. Malakai Black vs. Clark Connors, with the winner claiming the the new AEW All-Atlantic Championship.

What Does This Mean For The G1 Climax

While Clark Connors moving into his place in the upcoming Fatal Four Way match at Forbidden Door was an easy call, the upcoming G1 Climax tournament is another story entirely. Tomohiro Ishii is one of the men already announced for the 28 man round robin tournament, which starts in about three weeks.

With Ishii going down with an injury prior to the tournament, and with how coveted spots in this tournament can be – Ishii could be replaced in this years tournament. There’s many names in both NJPW, AEW, and beyond that could benefit from the spot. It’s likely AEW will give Ishii as much time as possible before this tournament to heal up, with him possibly being pulled from Forbidden Door as more of a precaution than anything else.

Another NJPW star who is absent from the card of Forbidden Door is Tetsuya Naito, who is also likely being kept away from big matches to ensure he can compete in the G1 Climax. Do you think Ishii will make the G1 Climax? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
