Ahead of AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door, we’d be very close to getting a dream match. Zack Sabre Jr. had called out Bryan Danielson for a match, hoping to find out who the greatest technical wrestler in the world truly is. However, Danielson would go down to injury – forcing Tony Khan to make the call to bring in a mystery opponent.
Tony Khan Blocked Bryan Danielson From Wrestling Injures
This is despite the protests of Danielson. He would try to convince Tony Khan to let him into the match, as Tony Khan would reveal during a recent media call for the event. Khan would say the following.
“Talk about the one-two punch of injuries, losing CM Punk and Bryan Danielson, two of the greatest professional wrestlers of all time. Bryan Danielson is so valuable to the company, backstage and of course on-screen. And most importantly on-screen, fans were so excited for Forbidden Door, him wrestling Zack Sabre Jr.
I think the anticipation was there, we had been hoping that we could really start building it up and Bryan was really starting to feel well after Anarchy in the Arena. He didn’t have any doubts whatsoever, I just didn’t want to take a chance … So I shut him down, and I think it was the right thing to do.”
Zack Sabre Jr. proved his ability to have a compelling match without bumps when he had a grappling exhibition with Katsuyori Shibata in 2021. However, Danielson being taken off the show was ultimately the right call.
Hyping Up The Replacement
As for the replacement opponent of Zack Sabre Jr, Tony Khan would have the following to say about what fans should expect.
“It was one of those also perfect situations because rarely do the stars align where you have a mystery opponent and a chance to build up a moment like this. It’s very fitting to go back to the United Center, where we’ve only had one show, and it was a great moment, and I know for sure we’re going to have that great moment.
I think there’s going to be a lot of great moments to expect on the show, but one thing I know is this great moment when we introduce Zack Sabre Jr’s mystery opponent. I’m really excited about it and I wish it had happened under different circumstances.”
Right now, the leading theory is that this will be the debut of the former Cesaro. This mystery opponent will be joining Blackpool Combat Club, and Cesaro has deep histories with Bryan Danielson, Jon Moxley, and was the final opponent of William Regal. AEW fans have been wanting to see him in the mix for months now, and will rightfully lose their minds if he is the one who will show up to wrestle Zack Sabre Jr. at Forbidden Door.
