If you’re a wrestling fan, chances are at some point – you’ve taken control of your favourite wrestler in one of the many video games that have represented the sport. In terms of WWE, for the better part of the last decade – they’ve been working with 2K Games, for the WWE 2K series. However, if you’re playing on PC – you might have just had your options cut down considerably – as 2K has purged the available games from the popular gaming platform, Steam.
2K Games Removes All But Two WWE Games From Steam
Earlier today, users of Steam would notice that just WWE 2K22 and 2K Battlegrounds would be available on the platform now. The likes of 2K19 & 2K20 would be removed, which is baffling to some fans. It could have something to do with licensing issues, which would fall in line with WWE removing theme songs from Spotify recently, namely ones from released wrestlers like Johnny Gargano.
It’s equally possible that 2K is simply looking to push fans towards the newest possible games. The gameplay of these games have not changed much in the past few years, with the only thing that changes is the roster, available moves, and improving graphics. You can get the same general experience with 2K18 and 2K22, with a major price difference.
By only having 2K22 available, someone wanting to play a WWE game on PC will either have to go with the most modern option, or look through more dubious means. What will happen upon the release of 2K23 will be interesting to see, and fans will be watching to see how long 2K22 is left supported if this is the new business practice that is being used.
It’s not an incident without precedent, with game studios dropping support for games all the time. From the likes of Forza Motorsport 7 to cult classics like Driver: San Francisco being abandoned. Gamers playing on console will be able to easily play these games through physical copies however, ensuring these games don’t fall into the category of lost media.
