Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has apologized after ending up in some hot water for using a dated and offensive term referring to those with dwarfism.
Dallas Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Apologizes for Using Derogatory Comment at Training Camp
The flub came when during the first day of the Cowboys’ training camp. While talking to the press in Oxnard, CA, the discussion turned to Larry Lacewell, who served as the team’s Director of College and Pro Scouting. Lacewell passed in May 2022 at the age of 85.
Jerry Jones said that he wanted to “get me somebody, a m****t” to stand next to Lacewell during practice. Maybe it’s for his amusement but the Little People of America were not amused.
The Little People of America is an organization that steps in for people living with dwarfism. In addressing Jones’ joke, the LPA wrote:
“M***** is a term that has widely been known to be derogatory for years and should be common knowledge to anyone in the public arena, such as Jerry Jones. Ignorance at this point is simply not an excuse. Any use of this disparaging slur along with suggestions or insinuations that our stature exists for amusement is deplorable and inexcusable.”
Jerry Jones would apologize early on July 27, 2022. “Earlier today I made a reference which I understand may have been viewed as offensive. I apologize,” the 79-year-old said.
