Last night was the end of the reign of Jonathan Gresham as ROH World Champion. Having won the belt back at Final Battle 2021, Gresham would very much seek to keep the spirit of ROH alive during uncertain times. However, when the company was purchased by AEW owner Tony Khan, the status of much of the companies roster remained unclear.
Gresham would hold onto the belt through Supercard of Honor, but lost it last night at Death Before Dishonor to Claudio Castagnoli. That match might have been all that fans will see of Gresham in both ROH & AEW however, as he’s reportedly requested his release.
Jonathan Gresham Was Frustrated In AEW – Requested His Release
According to a report from Fightful Select, Gresham would request his release yesterday prior to the show beginning. He felt disrespected by a lack of communication with the company, and how little time the planned match at Death Before Dishonor would receive. Gresham had a meeting with Tony Khan, where he would communicate his frustrations and has been said to have ‘cussed out’ Khan.
It would go as far as Gresham stating to Fightful that he is ‘done with wrestling for the foreseeable future’ after this month. It’s likely he will return, but taking a break to get into a better headspace is often essential in any profession, especially something as physically and mentally demanding as professional wrestling.
The End Of Terminus As Well?
Gresham would delete both his Twitter account, as well as the account for Terminus – a company Gresham ran alongside Baron Black. At the most recent Terminus event, Gresham would get a chance to wrestle Konosuke Takeshita in a fantastic contest, but one that was hard to enjoy due to lacking production values.
Without Gresham being involved in wrestling, Terminus will likely cease to exist. It was originally planned to carry on the legacy of ROH. Terminus shows often required a lot of talent from the AEW roster to run, which could be an issue with the severed relationship between Gresham & Khan. It remains unclear at this time if he was granted his release from contract.
