AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door is now in the books, and despite a rocky build with countless injuries and card changes – was one of the best PPV’s in recent memory. Every match met the expectations of fans, but some wrestlers felt out of place. This was especially true with The Young Bucks competing in a six man tag team match. However, they were originally planned to have a winner takes all championship match – until plans changed.
Young Bucks vs. FTR III Was Originally Planned For Forbidden Door
We would get a glimpse at the original plans in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter. Dave Meltzer would publish the following.
“Gedo’s original idea was for the Young Bucks to win the IWGP tag titles on the show and make it AEW vs. IWGP tag titles. It was changed, and the Young Bucks were on board with that change with the idea that it’s a cool story for FTR to have the IWGP, ROH and AAA tag titles. While belts mean less because there are so many of them, there is now a natural push for Young Bucks vs. FTR with four sets of belts at stake and being pushed as a unique match in wrestling history, and could logically be billed as the biggest tag team championship match in history, for that reason.”
Considering how incredible the last two matches between FTR & The Young Bucks have been, we could see them main event an upcoming PPV with all the gold on the line. This could be an ideal main event for All Out, even over a match like Jon Moxley & CM Punk to unify the AEW World Championship with the Interim Championship.
It was smart of NJPW & AEW to not blow the match in the middle of Forbidden Door, considering the potential scale of this now. We can only hope that nothing goes wrong between now and then, given the number of injuries that have recently hit the AEW roster. Young Bucks will be in action tonight, facing NJPW’s Bishamon on AEW Rampage.
