Tennis legend John McEnroe has blasted the Royal family over its role at Wimbledon.
Tennis Legend John McEnroe Blasts William And Kate’s Role At Wimbledon-‘We’re Talking About Some Pretty Minor Royals’
Members of the Royal family are known to attend the tennis championships every year. And this time around, it was no exception.
Prince William and Kate Middleton were on hand as they watched British tennis player Cameron Norrie battle his way past David Goffin to make it into the semi-finals. But it was the Royal protocol that got McEnroe frustrated.
As part of their attendance, the tennis players were obligated to bow down to Royalty. And this is something that did not sit well with John for the following reasons. First of all, it was ultimately the tennis players who put in the hard work and dedication.
Therefore, if there was anybody who deserved the full acclaim, then it should have been them. Secondly, John felt this was sending out a wrong message since society should be based on meritocracy.
In his comments, he said: “As for all the bowing and curtsying ‒ and we’re not just talking about the Queen here, we’re talking about some pretty minor royals ‒what was all that about?
“This was the class system gone mad, the opposite of a meritocracy.” John’s comments quickly gained traction on social media.
A certain subset of people were of the view that it was time to diminish the importance of the Royal family. Meanwhile, others felt that John’s comments had gone too far.
One person wrote: “He’s right. It’s not even the Queen just minor nobodies,” while another person stated: “How dare he complain about our RF.
“He is a guest in our Country and should stay away. If he does not like our RF, he would not like us complaining about his president.”
John certainly does not mince his words, and that is not going to be changing any time soon regardless of what others may have to say about it.
So there you have it folks. What did you think about this? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
