It is no longer news that actor, Will Smith slapped comedian Chris Rock onstage during the Academy Awards. On Friday, July 29, 2022, he apologized to Chris via a video via Instagram, YouTube, and Facebook. In the video, he said that and he is available whenever Chris is ready to talk.
He said in the video, “I’ve reached out to Chris and the message that came back is that he’s not ready to talk, and when he is, he will reach out,” the Bad Boys actor said, “So, I will say to you, Chris, I apologize to you. My behavior was unacceptable, and I’m here whenever you’re ready to talk.”
Chris Rock Says He Is Not A “Victim”
Will Smith went on to say that the reason he didn’t apologize to Chris in his Oscars acceptance speech, for Best Actor was because he was fogged out by the point and it’s all fuzzy. Moving forward, he also apologized to the comedian’s mother and family.
Will Smith Publicly Apologizes To Chris Rock Four Months After He Slapped Him At The OSCARS
He said “I saw an interview that his mother did. That’s one of the things about that moment I didn’t realize, I wasn’t thinking, but how many people got hurt in that moment, so I want to apologize to Chris’s mother; I want to apologize to Chris’s family, specifically Tony Rock [Chris’s younger brother]. We had a great relationship. Tony Rock was my man. This is probably irreparable.”
Will slapped Chris onstage after he made a joke of his wife, Jada Smith’s bald head. The actress is actually a victim of alopecia. Days later, Smith said he couldn’t withstand the joke and he was hysterical, so he was triggered and he slapped him. He admitted “I was out of line and I was wrong, I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.”
Although Will resigned from the Academy, he is not allowed to attend the Academy Awards for a decade. Chris hasn’t said much concerning the incidence. Will further admitted, in the video “I spent the last three months replaying and understanding the complexities and nuances of what happened, I’m not gonna try to unpack all of that right now but I can say to you, there was no part of me that thought that was the right way to behave in that moment.”
Chris didn’t respond to Will’s video, but during a stand-up show on Sunday, alongside Kevin Hart at the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, New Jersey, he took to the stage to say, “I’m not a victim, motherf—er,” as reported by Us Weekly. “Anyone who says words hurt has never been punched in the face,” and added, “Yeah, that s— hurt, motherf—er. … But I shook that s— off and went to work the next day … I don’t go to the hospital for a paper cut.”
