The injuries in the world of professional wrestling are not done, as another champion has been taken down. Just a few weeks after we’d see the NXT UK Tag Team Championships left vacant, NXT UK Champion Ilja Dragunov would suffer a leg injury – forcing him to let go of the championship he won from WALTER (now known as GUNTHER). However, NXT UK would quickly crown a new champion during their latest TV tapings.
Tyler Bate Is The New NXT UK Champion
Following Dragunov leaving the belt vacant, NXT UK would set up a tournament to name a new champion. Trent Seven & Tyler Bate would make the finals, fitting given their recent feud following the breakup of Moustache Mountain. Tyler Bate would come out on top, making him the first ever two time NXT UK Champion.
Bate originally won the championship back in 2019, where he was the first man to hold the belt – at only 19 years old. He would eventually lose the belt to Pete Dunne, who would hold the belt until he was torn down by WALTER. Bate being given a second reign makes perfect sense, as he remains one of the best wrestlers on the NXT UK brand – and one of the biggest names still on the brand.
Trent Seven is expected to keep feuding with Bate, perhaps even into a main event of the next NXT UK Takeover. Bate will likely reign for a while, with a match against Dragunov upon his return from injury a potentially huge angle for NXT UK. Right now, NXT UK is in a weird spot – but collaborations with NXT 2.0 talent is helping to get eyes on the product.
It’s hard to see NXT UK really grow beyond it’s current size. WWE has moved away from hiring indy wrestlers, and the entire basis of NXT UK was grabbing the biggest indy wrestlers in Europe for the roster. It’s almost an anomaly within WWE, having remain basically untouched in recent years from revamps or roster cuts.
