Earlier this year, the CM Punk experiment in AEW came to it’s peak, as the veteran was able to claim the AEW World Championship in a match against Hangman Page. He’d be injured during this match, and given time to stew at home, seeing the product work fine without him has seemingly brought him back to his old ways. Punk came back with a fury, and backstage issues came along with it – perhaps pushing Punk to the point of quitting AEW.
CM Punk Has Been Having Issues In AEW
This is a big situation in AEW, with Punk seemingly having issues with Hangman Page, stemming back to Page alluding to his issues with Colt Cabana during a promo. We have a more conclusive write up on what led to that, which can be read here.
In short, it has to due with lawsuits between old friends, and Punk trying to force Cabana out of the company. He even would have succeeded without The Young Bucks getting in the ear of AEW owner, Tony Khan. Cabana would instead get an ROH contract, keeping him away from CM Punk.
Potentially Walking Out Of The Company Over These Issues
Seemingly, this would not be good enough for CM Punk, and it’s just the start of these issues. Punk also reportedly refused to lose to Hangman Page at Double or Nothing, the event where Punk won the AEW World Championship. This has all led to Punk potentially just walking out of AEW as a whole, which would be a blow to the company – but one they could withstand now that Kenny Omega is back to active in-ring competition.
We will likely know more about the future of Punk by the time AEW Dynamite comes around next week. He’s set to meet Jon Moxley in a match to unify the AEW World & Interim World Championships. This match was intended for All Out, but was rushed for whatever reason – not boding well for the future of Punk in the company.
If Punk walks out, Moxley will gladly just accept being the proper champion, and will continue to wave the banner for AEW. He’s yet to face Hangman Page in a singles match, which would be a quick fix for a main event of AEW’s All Out PPV, perhaps even pleasing a Chicago crowd who is expecting a CM Punk main event.
