Since Triple H took over WWE Creative and AEW suffered a series of injuries, there’s been chatter on social media between fans and former wrestlers about the closing gap between AEW and WWE.
It’s not a surprise since AEW has built a good portion of their current roster with released WWE talent and began operating during a time when the WWE creatively was running in circles.
Is Tony Kahn Concerned About the Closing Gap Between AEW and WWE?
But even with the edge of being fresh and adding some awesome talent, AEW has remained locked in as the number 2 company but showed signs of growing.
Then a series of injuries happened and we’ve seen stars wrestle mid carders in main events to fill that gap, and it showed a lack of build for many of the wrestlers but they gave it their all and gave us some fun matches.
But today’s a different world than it was the last couple of years following Vince McMahon stepping aside to allow Stephanie McMahon to join Nick Kahn as Co-CEO and Triple H taking over as head of WWE Creative.
New world
While AEW Dynamite got the best of WWE NXT during the Wednesday Night Wars, it wasn’t by overwhelming numbers.
And instead of growing their fanbase, as many former wrestlers and promoters have talked about, AEW continued to book for their hardcore fanbase.
Vince did the same in the WWE while he continued to do what he’s done for forty years, and that’s bring in celebrities to get eyes on the WWE.
It’s debatable if Vince’s efforts helped grow the WWE fanbase as their ratings didn’t show it, but there’s a new energy in the WWE now.
Triple H has brought back talent Vince released and tweaked the main shows toward more of a wrestling show instead of sports entertainment.
Reason for concern
Triple H has done more than start changing the shows, he’s attempting to change the culture in the WWE where the talent has more freedom and say instead of working for an audience of one.
It’s a slow process, but the improvement is apparent and it could be something Tony Kahn is concerned about as the edge he had is disappearing.
For the longest time, the WWE was beyond predictable and AEW could move along in their comfort zone, but with Triple H running it and with news of Raw and Smackdown going to Netflix to give them more leeway, the gauntlet has been dropped.
We doubt the WWE will look to put them out of business, but there’s the threat that AEW talent will want to move to the WWE, and that could leave huge holes in the AEW roster.
Of course, it’ll help AEW that their injured stars are returning, and we’re looking forward to seeing how AEW responds to WWE’s change in policy and culture.
