The most recent episode of the Joe Rogan Experience covered many interesting topics. The famous podcaster had one of the most controversial people on the planet as his guest, and the episode did meet all our expectations.
Amongst the covered topics, one was particularly interesting since Mark seems to confirm that he made an omission with the design of one of his products that might be in violation of each privacy guideline.
Joe Rogan pointed out that the Meta ‘smart glasses’ could be potentially used as a ‘spying gadget’. Mark tried to back up his idea with the glasses, however, he confessed that yes, with one simple twitch they might be used for secretive video recording.
Joe Rogan Makes Mark Zuckerberg Confess That He Created A Privacy Violating Gadget
Meta introduced the glasses to the world back in 2021, as a collaboration with the famous optics brand Ray-Ban. Their equipment includes a micro camera located on top of the frame and a microphone. This addition to the classic eyeglasses brand allows users to take photos and videos. In addition to this, the glasses come equipped with a small flashlight on the other corner.
The light allows users to take photos in places without enough illumination. Mark confirms that the company is still working on improving the product and will continue introducing new versions with additional options and features.
Mid conversation, Joe Rogan thought about how the glasses comply with the privacy guidelines of the society. Since people can just start ‘filming things’, how would that affect the privacy of people around the person wearing the glasses?
Zuckerberg had a desperate try to get out of the cornered situation. He pointed out that the glasses have a small flashlight in the corner. This light is active during the recording time, indicating to people around that they are on. However, Joe did not hesitate to ask whether it is possible to bypass this by simply covering the light with tape.
“I guess, in theory.” – Mark replied. “It blinks, and it’s a pretty active indicator.”
Zuckerberg didn’t have a strong counter to this. He claims that the cover-up of the flashlight might interfere with the function of the camera as well. However, there is no official confirmation on this until now. Meta is also unavailable for comment on the matter.
Mark Zuckerberg is not new to privacy concerns. He owns Facebook and Instagram and recently faced a backlash for breach of privacy. Meta supports the police by reporting private messages from Facebook users to them. The exact case is about a police investigation regarding an alleged illegal abortion case.
