Jeff Cobb has been working hard to make the finals in the A-Block of the G1 Climax, after dropping big matches to Kazuchika Okada & JONAH. Tonight, just 24 hours after a bizzare match against Toru Yano – he needs to take on a very dangerous man in Tom Lawlor.
To make the finals, Cobb needs to win tonight and have both Okada & JONAH lose their upcoming matches on Tuesday. Cobb was in action yesterday, but it was a fairly easy match against Toru Yano – more having to survive the tricks of Yano on the way to hitting Tour Of The Islands.
Tom Lawlor Needs To Cut Jeff Cobb Down To Size
Cobb had a clear power edge beginning this match, able to force Lawlor to the ropes. Lawlor tried to fight back, before being thrown across the ring. Cobb would rush in and end up in the Rear Naked Choke. Lawlor would hold on even as Cobb got the ropes, before being dumped to the floor.
Forearm smashes would be exchanged, before Lawlor tried to grab an armbar. Cobb would think fast, and was able to powerbomb him right onto the apron. Lawlor would be driven into the turnbuckles in the ring before a leaping uppercut would land. Cobb would ride Lawlor like a surfboard, before a short arm lariat.
Lawlor knew the standing moonsault would follow, before grabbing a kneebar on Cobb. Cobb was able to block, but the leg kicks led to Lawlor popping Cobb up and into an armbar. Lawlor would move from submission to submission, before Cobb was able to just block into a release Belly To Belly Suplex.
Nasty Knee On The Brain Is A Deadly Finisher
Lawlor would show a feat of strength, getting Cobb up for the Musou slam. Some heavy strikes would follow, before the tornado choke attempt. Cobb would put Lawlor on the top rope and try to strike Lawlor to the mat, only to end up in a choke again – before being countered into a suplex.
Enziguri would land to Cobb, before a spinning wheel kick to the back of the head. The heavy strikes to Cobb were quickly adding up, and a big open palm strike to the face would follow. Kimura Lock would be applied, and Cobb would fight free before taking a knee strike to the face. Nasty Knee On The Brain would be avoided, but the RegalPlex would not.
It doesn’t matter how much size you give up, a knee to the back of the skull will keep you down – and Cobb was knocked out and pinned for the victory. Lawlor shows he belonged, and Cobb is out of the running for the finals.
